NO NEW POWER PLANTS! NOT COAL, NOT NUKES

At its June 28th Board f Directors meeting, CWFNC reaffirmed its stance against all new centralized power plants. NC's electric utilities, which produce all but a small amount of our power from coal and nuclear plants, are responsible for over 80% of the state's water withdrawals, and they evaporate over a billion gallons at the plant or downstream each day. Centralized coal and nuclear plants are not only a source of water pollution, but of water DEPLETION in our streams and reservoirs. Looking at a complete energy budget for nuclear energy plants shows that tying up the capital and fossil fuels to build them will only PREVENT progress to a sustainable energy and water future, with no climate benefit for decades.

Most folks don't realize that the single biggest waste in NC's energy budget happens RIGHT AT THE POWER PLANTS! About 2/3 of the fuel, whether coal or nuclear, doesn't produce electricity, but is just dumped into our atmosphere or rivers as waste heat. Think about it, 2/3 of the coal ripped from our mountaintops, 2/3 of the coal and uranium mining deaths and lung cancers, 2/3 of the thousands of boxcars hauling coal to NC power plants each day, 2/3 of the radioactive and toxic waste and 2/3 of the water withdrawn from public rivers aren't producing any useful energy.

When you save energy, you save water, too. When you advocate for an end to energy policies that commit ratepayers to big electric plants for fear of blackouts, you are working for a safe water future, too. Your voice is needed to call for fair and just policies for NC's future water resources. Contact us today!
