Hydraulic fracturing
Hydraulic fracturing or “fracking” is a method of extracting natural gas that involves blasting underground rock thousands of feet into the ground with a cocktail of sand, water and chemicals. Fracking is not currently allowed in NC, but shales underlying 14 NC counties have caught gas companies’ interest. We are working to educate North Carolinians about the potential social, economic, health and environmental impacts of fracking.
Water Justice and Privatization
Our Water Justice Campaign draws attention to the critical need for protection of the public’s drinking water—both quality and quantity—as a basic human right. We lead outreach and workshops on drinking water rights and systems, work with communities impacted by privatized drinking water and wastewater, and advocate for protection of North Carolinians’ basic water rights.
Well user protection
There are more than 2.5 million private well users in NC. We educate private well users and advocate for stronger protections of NC’s groundwater resources.
NC SAVE$ ENERGY
NC SAVE$ ENERGY is an initiative by a growing number of organizations, including Clean Water for North Carolina, to create a statewide, independent (non-utility) energy efficiency program. NC SAVE$ ENERGY is one example of our work at the interface of water and energy issues in NC.
A clean Pigeon River
The long-polluted Pigeon River flows from a large paper mill in Haywood County, NC into Cocke County, TN. We partner with downstream residents to work toward cleanup of the river.
Urban community streams
Small urban streams running through neighborhoods or on public grounds are often degraded, undervalued and underutilized. Urban streams are also often considered a low priority by state and federal agencies. Our partnerships with other organizations in Asheville, NC enable us to train young adults in urban neighborhoods to monitor these streams and take action to improve their communities!
